Both the Rancho Verde Boys Basketball and Soccer teams made runs to the CIF Semifinals in their respective divisions in the past few weeks. Unfortunately, the results for both teams were similar, as they came up one game short of advancing to the championship round.
Boys Basketball advanced to the semis with victories over Diamond Bar (55-24), Long Beach Jordan (55-40), and Etiwanda (57-40) in the quarterfinals. In the semis, RVHS faced Long Beach Poly, the #1 seed in Division 1AA. After falling behind early, the Mustangs rallied to pull within 2 points on several occasions in the 4th quarter, the last of which with 20 seconds to go in the game. Rancho Verde came up just short, falling to the Jackrabbits by a score of 47-44. It was still a banner year for the Mustangs, with an overall record of 28-3 and a 19 game winning streak, tying the school record from 2005.
After winning the regular season finale vs. Arlington, the Mustang Boys Soccer team were crowned Inland Valley League Champs and entered the CIF playoffs on a hot streak. Playoff victories over Indio (2-1), Katella (1-0) and Long Beach Cabrillo, the #1 seed (1-0), propelled Rancho Verde into the semifinals vs. a familiar foe, Long Beach Jordan.
Jordan eliminated Rancho Verde a year ago, in the CIF Quarterfinals and this years Semifinals would be another tightly contested match. RVHS fell behind early, 1-0, on a penalty kick, but rallied to tie the score at 1-1 going into the half. Jordan again scored early in the 2nd half, which would prove to be the final margin at 2-1. However, the Mustangs have qualified for the Boys Soccer State Regional Tournament and will be playing next Tuesday, 3/8, in a game that is TBA.
