The Rancho Verde HS Boys Soccer team put together a solid preseason record, and won both of their league games this week to open Inland Valley League play. The Mustangs compiled a 11-4-1 record prior to this week, with strong showings in both the Hemet and Riverside Poly tournaments. Preseason victories over perennial soccer powers Great Oak and Yucaipa helped bolster Rancho Verde’s resume as they moved into league play.
This past Tuesday, the Valley View Eagles came to Mustang Stadium in the first matchup of the IVL season. Rancho Verde took a 1-1 tie at the half and turned it into a solid 3-1 victory to move to 1-0. On Thursday, the Mustangs hit the road to take on the Cougars from Canyon Springs. In a back and forth game, Rancho Verde came out victorious again with a 4-2 win, and sit alone atop the IVL standings at 2-0 (13-4-1 overall) on the season.
Junior forward Alfredo Moreira leads the Mustangs in scoring this year, with 15 goals and 9 assists, while Senior midfielder Hugo Bernal has 10 goals and 6 assists. Senior defender Omar Caballero anchors a stingy defense for the Mustangs that has only given up 15 goals on the season.
