The Rancho Verde Varsity Football team (7-2, 4-0) will play for an outright Inland Valley League Championship tonight when they take on the Arlington Lions. Another IVL crown would be the Mustangs’ 9th in the last 10 years, and avenge a 2nd place finish to Riverside Poly a year ago. The Mustangs clinched at least a share of the league title last week with a 49-6 victory over J.W. North HS.
In the North win, Junior QB EJ Stewart completed 14 of 18 passes for 263 yards and 3 TDs. Jamal Scott added two more touchdowns on the ground, while Bryan Thompson checked in with a 58-yard TD reception. Senior RB Darius Ruff also got in on the action with a 3-yard touchdown run to end the first half.
Arlington enters the matchup fighting for a playoff spot of their own, at 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the IVL. Last week the Lions pulled off a close win (17-14) by kicking the game winning field goal vs. Valley View, with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game. Arlington could potentially end up in a 3 way tie for 3rd place (and the last playoff spot), depending on other league outcomes tonight.
